A Few Things
Cleanup: I saw a fair number of people out yesterday on the city cleanup. I view this as positive marketing and PR for our city (with the benefit of being free) in addition to the aesthetic and environmental benefits. Due to schedules yesterday, we’ll be doing our cleanup effort today.
Retail Sales Tax: Per the Gazette, 2009 Q1 Sales Tax: Montgomery County, down 6 percent, to $6 million.
Gazette Editorial on Securing Vacant Building: I think this presents a typical Amsterdam conundrum: everyone wants to get rid of the blight and I doubt anyone is opposed to better hydrant infrastructure; but no one wants to pay for it as it would mean taxes. The money needs to come from somewhere so the choices involve a conflict between raising taxes or acquiring grant moneys and raising taxes to pay for it. Or doing nothing. Simple as that.
