Tear Mohasco Down (Updated)
Update: I heard a guy at Stewart’s tell this other guy who had overheard a woman whose husband owns a computer say that another developer is interested in the site too. Tick, tock….
From the Recorder (here):
In a special meeting on Wednesday, the Amsterdam Industrial Development Agency accepted an option agreement on the Mohasco complex for an economic development project that could bring as many as 400 jobs to the city.
“If this were to come to fruition, this project is probably the biggest thing this city has seen in my lifetime,” said AIDA Chairman Robert Quick.
There are so many things wrong with this project I’m not sure where to start. Here goes.
First, a consolidated data center in the city will never work. We’ve never had a data center here and and why would you build a data center here when you could build it in Albany, Saratoga, Clifton Park, et al. What self-respecting terabyte of storage would reside here when it could reside elsewhere?
Second, we have high taxes here so who would ever start a business here with such high taxes. And even worse we’d probably give them a reduced assessment or a PILOT program plus our tax payer dollars from the state to build the center. And the developer building the site would profit!
Third a data center will never work here and without a doubt, the data center would be turned into Section 8 housing. Tear it down!
Fourth, why is AIDA focusing on technology based businesses when we all know that the growth and rebirth of Amsterdam will come from distribution and manufacturing businesses in AIDA financed shell buildings. Tear it down and put up shell buildings!
Fifth, who wants to work in Amsterdam when you could work in Albany, Saratoga, Clifton Park, et al? Don’t they know our taxes are high? And if people worked here they might buy homes here. And if a number of people bought homes here don’t you know our home prices might rise? How can people afford to live here with rising home values? And what about the taxes!
I could go on but it’s clear: Mohasco needs to come down! Now, the clock is ticking…
