From the Daily Gazette:

A presentation on a landfill proposal ended abruptly Tuesday when an Amsterdam councilman said continued proposals could lead to an “upheaval” in the city “like something that happened to an Arizona congresswoman.”

Amsterdam Material Recycling president Robert Noel left the Common Council chambers after Fourth Ward Alderman William Wills made the statement while talking about a proposal to build a landfill and bring in 200,000 tons of construction and demolition debris into the city as a way to produce revenue.

Wills later conceded that the remark, suggesting that Noel could be attacked like U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., who was gravely injured in a mass shooting that claimed six lives on Saturday, was not appropriate. But Noel had already gotten into his car and drove away.

WTF, really. This rhetoric has no place in civic discourse and should be condemned. You have a right to say what you want but you bear the responsibility for your words.

Small City, Big Heart? Given our esteemed cast of demagogues on a host of recent issues, I’d say you’ve got to be f’ing kidding.
