Apathy 12010 — Election 2013
After the 2011 local elections, I crunched voter turnout and found this:
Here’s an interesting statistic and trend for our fair city– the plummeting voter turnout.
For the 2007 Mayoral Race, the total votes cast were 4495.
For the 2011 Mayoral Race, the total votes cast were 3435.
The 2007 to 2011 trend is -23.5% . Wow
In the same post, I also noted the steep drop in the Ward races.
If we look at 2013, the plummet continues:
As it’s Amsterdam — where today looks the same as it did two decades ago regardless of what changes around us — , I can merely repeat what I wrote two years ago:
3) Local voters are tuning out from the political process driven largely by a dysfunctional political culture and ecosystem that kills and sucks life from innovative, progressive and future-thinking policies.
4) Local voters are tuning out from a local media culture driven by demagoguery, nihilism, cronyism and ideologues.
The only change will be that the Republican win will be deemed as a mandate from the voters , regardless of voter turnout, unlike when Democrats win and their voter turnout is anything but a mandate from the voters.
I have a few more thoughts that I’ll reserve for tomorrow.
